History & Legacy of New Life Church
Foundation and Early Growth
New Life Church, originally known as First Apostolic United Pentecostal Church (UPCI), was established in 1968 by Raymond D. Moore and his wife, Hazel, in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. The church began in a small building and quickly attracted members, including those who had previously attended the Calvary Pentecostal Church of Gatesville before its disbandment. As the congregation expanded, the church soon outgrew its rented space, prompting Raymond Moore and the church members to purchase land and construct a new building for their growing community.
Building the Church and Community
The newly acquired land was initially just a field, but with the dedication of several pastor friends and church members, it transformed into a vibrant place of worship. Notable contributors to the construction included pastors Paul Matthew, Bobby Sanders, and Jerry Sullivan, who joined Raymond Moore and the congregation in building the church. Raymond Moore also built a home for his family on a lot behind the church, where they lived until his passing. Known for his carpentry skills, Moore became a respected figure in Crystal Springs.
Leadership and Influence
Under Raymond Moore’s leadership, seven ministers were mentored, many of whom continue to serve God to this day. The church’s Sunday School program produced influential members of the Mississippi District, such as Darrell Bates, who served as District Youth President, and ministers James Menona and Wilbur Cupstid, whose lives were shaped by Moore’s ministry.
Growth and Enduring Hope
New Life Church has experienced periods of growth and change, at one point reaching over 100 members. Throughout its history, the church has remained a beacon of hope and light, with the blessings of God continually present within its congregation.
Transition of Leadership
After Raymond Moore’s passing, following 31 years of service, the church sought a leader to continue its vision. Wilbur Cupstid, one of Moore’s mentees, was chosen as the second pastor and served faithfully for 25 years. On August 18, 2024, Cupstid retired, and Darrell and Jessica Bates were elected as the new pastors.
New Era as New Life Church
Under the leadership of Pastor Darrell Bates, the church has experienced remarkable growth and has been renamed New Life Church. The congregation continues to serve as a beacon of light and truth, positively impacting missionaries and countless lives through its efforts. After 54 years of service to the Crystal Springs community, New Life Church stands as a testament to its founder, previous pastors, and current leadership. To God be the glory, now and forever!
